Peekskill Inn to undergo major enhancements

The city’s only motel is about to start a spring makeover to spruce up its exterior and remodel its interior.

“The Inn ownership is committed to making major improvements to enhance our guest experiences,” said Richard Braverman, president of the Peekskill Inn. “Our architect presented plans to carry out extensive upgrades to the property and to build a new front entrance with a tree-lined divided driveway to dress up Main Street. We expect most of the improvements to be substantially completed before the summer.” At the same time, the Inn will begin remodeling the décor of its rooms to match the new exterior theme.

The project is being scheduled in a few stages with each building on the previous one. In the first stage, dormers are being added to the roofline on the main wing. The old roof on the main wing and the lobby building are being replaced with a dimensional architectural asphalt roof.

An attractive fieldstone wall will replace the existing hedges along the 300 foot length with cutouts for new steps to the rooms and a handicap ramp. Similar treatment will be given to the rear with the addition of stone piers and pillars between sets of rooms.

In the front, 25 new pillars will sit on the new wall, supporting the walkway roof. All gutters and downspouts will be replaced and housed inside each pillar to hide them from the sight line. Lantern lighting will dress up each pillar over the stairs.

Dressing up the roof line along with the dormers are a chimney and a central cupola which will be lit at night and viewable from the harbor. The existing concrete walks outside the rooms will be resurfaced; outside fascia will be replaced; ceiling fixtures outside each room entry are to be replaced; and all exposed wood, including doors and windows would be painted to match the color decor.

All the old wrought iron balcony fencing will be replaced with a more attractive and up-to-date fencing that will allow full visibility of the Hudson River.

On Main Street, the entrance will be bracketed with several stone piers with an iron fence between the piers. The wide driveway will be separated by a median planted with grass and trees. Large trees and plants will dot the property to provide an attractive setting and add a “gateway” effect to the entrance.

One of the Inn’s rooms is being turned into a model room with a new bathroom and fixtures, new interior space with closets, furniture, lighting, flat-screen TV, heating and A/C. Over time all rooms will be remodeled.

“This is an ambitious project that is overdue,” said Bert Tobin, the Inn’s owner manager. “We have every confidence in Peekskill’s future and our ongoing role in supplying its lodging needs. We have to change with the times and what had worked for our founders when they opened for business in 1957 now needs to be considered in light of the market demands of a new generation.”
