Saturday March 27 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm | Tamm E. Hunt Sings the Billie Holiday Songbook
In Celebration of Women's History Month. Tamm E. displays a vocal texture and style that only arrives with years of due diligence in preparation along with some serious natural talent. Tamm E.'s improvisational vocal skills are noteworthy on every tune and outstanding on Blue Skies, God Bless the Child, and Summertime. Although she clearly has her own unique style and voice, one can unquestionably hear overtones of Little Jimmy Scott and maybe a combo of Nancy Wilson and Sassy at times. She sounds like Tamm E.; and that's a good thing. ~ THE JAZZ CHASER: June 16, 2003 REVIEW: Tamm E's new debut CD "Live @ Birdland", on the New Jazz Audience label, feaures eight well-known standards that she brings back to life and makes soundly relevant through her highly expressive style and subtle creativity. Another "Raising the Bar" Production by Earl John Powell. $15 with advanced reservations, $20 at the door

Friday April 16 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm | Etienne Charles' Quartet, James Shipp (percussion and vibraphone), Ben Williams (bass), Rudy Royston (drums)
Born in Trinidad, Etienne Charles' music is distinctly influenced by the sounds of calypso, steel pan, and African Shango drumming. A critically acclaimed trumpeter, Charles plays a jazz griot, reflecting sounds of the past and sounds of place. Mixing jazz with Afro-Cuban and calypso styles, Charles' sophomore album, Folklore, illustrates the crossroads culture of the Caribbean. Folklore tells of the folk characters in his native Trinidad through the 26-year-old's wholly original compositions. According to legend, Douens are the lost souls of young children (they can be seen in the forest with their floppy hats, featureless faces and backwards feet). "Mama D'lo" (Mother of the Water) reflects a Caribbean take on the mermaid as protector of the sea. On Folklore, Charles brings those stories to life with a skill that won him the 2006 National Trumpet Competition. Another "Raising the Bar" Production by Earl John Powell. $15 with advanced reservations, $20 at the door
